Major Projects

The Falklands is one of the most isolated locations in the World. Given the very extended supply chains, infrequent re-supply opportunities, micro local economy, lack of infrastructure and frequently hostile outside working conditions, can make the Falklands a very difficult location to undertake a major project.

Case Study: Volker Stevin port refurbishment works at East Cove Military Port

Byron and Volker Stevin started liaising at the early stages which led to Byron assisting this large marine construction project:

Logistics: Byron was able to advise on the most effective way of shipping items so enabling works took place early on, leading to a very efficient project mobilisation;

International Procurement. Byron was through its contacts able to recommend, procure and ship a large containerised facility including offices, meeting room, industrial kitchen, dining facility, toilets and changing rooms.

Local Procurement. The Falklands due to the micro size has few resources and support services. Byron through its expert knowledge of where to source goods and services from was able to keep the project on track, without having to utilise costly and time consuming off islands resources.

Stevedoring. Byron stevedores worked the project mobilisation vessels and discharged the cargoes which included: small craft, a multi-cat, the world’s largest componentised jack-up, very heavy lift crawler cranes, plant, containers, breakbulk materials and out of gauge piles.

Project Plant. Byron has an extensive amount of materials handling, transport and construction plant, all maintained and inspected to Falklands DVSA equivalent and is UK LOLER compliant.

Project Operatives. As an international contractor, Volker Stevin, required experienced, multi-disciplined and UK certificated plant operatives and personnel. Byron’s personnel met this demanding requirement and have the additional advantages of being locally based and fully acclimatised to work in the testing Falklands weather conditions.

Accommodation. Byron supplied newly built, high quality residential accommodation in Stanley for long-term project members.

HSE. All services have to be supplied to UK standard HSE requirements.

Quality Assurance. Byron is an ISO 9001 certified company so provides service in compliance with these QA processes.

Readymix Concrete. As a peripheral activiy, Byron owns the standalone business, Stanley Readymix Ltd which provides ready mixed concrete to the Falkland Islands Government, MoD contractors at the Mount Pleasant Complex and private sector contractors around the Falkland Islands. Byron supplied Volker Stevin with concrete to shoreside and quayside locations and on to the dolphins.
